What is a stimboard?

A stimboard, also known as a sensory board or sensory collage, is a visual representation of the sensory experiences that can be calming, relaxing, or stimulating for individuals with sensory processing differences or sensory sensitivities.

The purpose of a stimboard is to create a personalized collection of images, GIFs, or videos that elicit positive sensory responses for the individual. These stimuli often target the five main senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. The content on a stimboard can range from vibrant colors, nature scenes, rhythmic patterns, ASMR videos, textured fabrics, calming scents, and more.

Stimboards are often curated digitally on platforms like Tumblr, Pinterest, or Instagram, where users create a visually pleasing and organized collage of images or GIFs. However, stimboards can also exist in physical form, with a collection of tactile objects such as fidget toys, soft fabrics, sensory balls, scented items, etc.

Stimboards are effective tools for self-regulation and sensory integration. They can help individuals with neurodivergent conditions, such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and anxiety, to manage overwhelming sensory input, reduce stress, and improve focus and relaxation.

The act of creating or exploring a stimboard allows individuals to have a sense of control over their sensory experiences and provides a safe space to engage with stimuli that bring comfort and joy. It can also serve as a form of self-expression and social communication, as individuals can share their stimboards with others or explore stimboards created by the neurodivergent community.

Overall, a stimboard is a personalized collection of sensory stimuli that promotes self-regulation, relaxation, and enjoyment for individuals with sensory processing differences.
